How to Winterize Your Water Feature in 5 Simple Steps
Southern Ontario winters can be tough, but with a little preparation, your pond or waterfall can ride out the cold safely — and look great doing it. Whether you’re running your water feature year-round or shutting it down for the season, these five simple steps will keep everything healthy and ready for spring.
Step 1: Clean It Up
Start with a good clean. Remove fallen leaves, dead plants, and any debris from the surface and skimmer. This helps prevent decay that can affect water quality or lead to sludge buildup once things thaw out in spring.
Step 2: Trim Aquatic Plants
Cut back hardy plants to just above the water line and remove any tropicals. You can overwinter tropical plants indoors in a sunny window or greenhouse — they’ll be ready to return once the weather warms up again.
Step 3: Decide — Run It or Shut It Down?
If you’re keeping it running:
Add a de-icer and aerator to maintain oxygen flow and prevent full ice coverage. Make sure you have access to water for top-ups through winter, and that your plumbing can drain safely in case of a power outage.
If you’re shutting it down:
Disconnect and clean your pump, then store it in a bucket of water in a frost-free area to keep the seals from drying out. Install your de-icer and aerator to protect your fish and maintain gas exchange under the ice.
Step 4: Prep for Fish
Once water temperatures drop below 10°C, it’s time to stop feeding your fish. Their metabolism slows in cooler weather, and uneaten food can affect water quality. Add a floating de-icer and aerator to keep oxygen levels stable and create an open area in the ice for gas exchange.
Step 5: Check Your Equipment
Now’s the perfect time to inspect your pond lights, dosing system, and tubing. Replacing or ordering parts before spring will save time and stress when you’re ready to start everything up again.
